I watched a very interesting piece on CNN whilst waiting to head home from my rather relaxing holiday in Indonesia. It was about how we are now living in a post antibiotic world. It was quite terrifying. Long and short of it is that we have not had any new antibiotics in many years and whereas previously we always had a bigger badder antibiotic to take over where the last one failed, we now don’t.
I’m not one to believe in the big Pharma conspiracy, especially when it comes to immunisation and all that jazz. In fact in this case immunisation will limit the impact running out of antibiotics will have. However, I can’t help but feel that in this case, pharma companies have dropped the ball and in fact perhaps is an argument for some drugs being developed by not for profits and government.
As I was laying pondering this, I began to think about legalisation of current “illegal” drugs and how the legalisation of these could change the world. Obviously, it would initially limit crime, but then I began musing on the idea of the revenue from the government licensed sale of recreational drugs could be used to fund the research into new health drugs for mankind. Obviously a lot more thought would have to go in to this, but I think it could be an interesting development.
What do you think?
